When the reports came out last week that De’Aaron Fox had the Spurs as his preferred destination in 2026 free agency, my immediate instinct was that the Spurs shouldn’t trade for him right now. He’s a top 20 player at best who is going to command a maximum contract. I could see better players wanting to team up with Victor Wembanyama. I didn’t think it made sense to sacrifice their young players and draft picks for him.

It turns out they agreed with that sentiment. They acquired Fox without giving up a single valuable asset. They kept Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, and all but one valuable future first-round pick. This is a free agency signing cloaked as a trade1. And they still have the flexibility to make another big move through a trade or free agency.
